It is a computer network communication module that can leverages Ethernet Distance and WAN technologies in concert to transparently drive Ethernet LAN communications beyond the IEEE 802.3 specifications for today’s twisted pair wiring distance limitation of 328 feet or 100 meters.

In the late 1980’s Twisted pair wiring for Ethernet became the preferred cable standard, however Ethernet over Twisted pair has a unfortunate distance limit of only 328 feet or 100 meters.

All Ethernet device manufactures since then have limited your installable Ethernet Distance limit to 100m unless you add another powered Ethernet device to bridge and boost the Ethernet signal to another 100m.

Devices that communicate outside their physical structure do so on a variety of Network interfaces using core Ethernet data-transmission protocols.

Original Ethernet LAN communications was designed and deployed on a copper coax buss topology that could travel up to 900 feet or 275 meters.

This was the standard distance for Ethernet. Original Ethernet LAN communications was a mere 10MBs and that 900 ft distance is true for all 10MB Ethernet hub and switches.

Today you can deploy 10MB Ethernet on standard telephone wiring in 2-pair strands or in bulk bundled pairs from your source LAN up to 900 feet / 275 meters without any break, interruption or devices in between. Just pure LAN to LAN at the Ethernet Distance Limit of 900 feet.

In the late 1980’s Category rated Twisted pair wiring for Ethernet became the preferred cable standard as did 100MBs Ethernet. 100MBs Ethernet has a nasty and unfortunate distance limit of only 328 feet or 100 meters on any kind of copper wiring.
All 100MBs or above Ethernet device manufactures since then have limited your installable distance limit to 100 meters unless you add another powered Ethernet device to bridge and boost the Ethernet signal to another 100 meters. This requires electrical power every 100 meters as well for installers.

Ethernet extenders drive long range, high-speed data communications between geographically separated LANs or LAN devices and create very cost-effective, bridged Ethernet connections. VDSL (Very high data rate DSL) is an xDSL technology providing data and voice transmission up to a theoretical limit of 52 Mbit/s downstream and 12 Mbit/s upstream over a single twisted pair of wires. Currently, the standard VDSL uses up to 4 different frequency bands, two for upstream (from the client to the telco) and two for downstream. The standard modulation technique is either QAM (Quadrature amplitude modulation) or DMT (Discrete multitone modulation) which are not compatible, but have similar performance.

 Currently, the most used technology is DMT. The available bit rates range from about 26 Mbit/s symmetric for a loop of about 1500 m, up to 100 Mbit/s symmetric for a few hundred meters. These fast speeds mean that VDSL is capable of supporting new high bandwidth applications such as HDTV, as well as telephone services (Voice over IP) and general Internet access, over a single connection.

A new VDSL standard is now available, named VDSL2 that delivers data and voice transmission at theoretical maximum of 250 Mbit/s full duplex.
