Neither rain, nor sleet nor 328 foot Ethernet limit shall sway the United States Postal Service (USPS) video camera security systems from their duty to help prevent burglaries, vandalism and other security threats. The USPS relies upon their video network as a key part of their security success, but the 328 foot Ethernet distance limit causes significant headaches.

Diebold is helping USPS implement and extend their video surveillance camera networks beyond this limit with the help of the Enable-IT 820 Ethernet Extender. With the 820, Diebold can power cameras out as far as 900 ft and the Enable-IT 865 can support them up to 2,500 feet away.

Since the 820 and 865 provide PoE power to the other end of the circuit, the USPS can even power its IP video cameras via the same wire, saving costly cabling and power installations at the other end. With the introduction of a central UPS for power redundancy, the USPS could even lose power and continue providing PoE power to its video camera network during the outage.

Diebold’s selection of the Enable-IT 820 allows power inside the building to be pushed over the Ethernet cable to the 820, which further boosts the signal and allows a camera 900 ft away from the switch to receive power and distribute its video data. Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology allows both power and data to be transmitted over the same Category 5 (a.k.a. Cat 5) cable that is used for data. This allows Diebold to install cameras and the 820 extender in places where it does not need an electrical connection. The PoE power coming over the data cable powers both. The result is a greatly simplified and less expensive solution. By adding a UPS power backup solution, the camera equipment could stay running even if the regular electrical power failed, adding to the security capabilities and providing increased reliability.

Operating in Rain, Snow, Sleet, …
Like the dedicated postal carriers, the video cameras must deliver their messages, regardless of the outside conditions. The USPS has offices around the United States, including some of the hottest and coldest places in the country. Outdoor cameras exposed to these conditions require solid state electronic components. Diebold selected Enable-IT Ethernet extenders, which can support temperature ranges as extreme as from -30°C (-22°F) to +75°C (167°F) over long distances.

Centralizing Security Camera Monitoring
IP-based cameras are vastly superior to their closed-circuit TV (CCTV) predecessors. The content from an IP-based camera can be viewed from any location on the network. This allows the USPS and other large organizations to centralize their video surveillance management and not require on-site or nearby surveillance managers. Implementing DVRs also makes the retrieval and playback of data much easier.

Diebold’s implementation of Enable-IT Ethernet extenders allows the USPS to build even larger video surveillance networks, including providing power to the cameras. The 328 foot Ethernet limit no longer applies and the benefits of IP-based digital video camera technology can be immediately recognized.
